Interesting journalistic edit as the head to head was supposed to be the
companies own comments on their strategy.
The comments attributed to the media spokesperson of the company in favour
of the outsourcing contained the argument that the performance of the
overseas call centre operative was better than their UK counterpart (the
spokespersons colleagues). Does wonders for the moral of their workforce and
we all know the effect of poor moral on service.. Clever editing by the BBC
or just insensitive comments of the company spokesperson???
Clearly consumers can chose whether they want their data to be accessible by
overseas processors or whether they wish to transfer product allegience to a
company who mantains their data only in the UK. The latter being argued as
more expensive. Time will tell if consumers care. Given the companies
reported on some list members will be their customers, will they terminate
their products or keep with them I wonder?
The EU and CBI have debated the development of model contract clauses to be
used in data export / data import situations. The question is how will
anyone know if they are used. See the Europa website and Data Protection
Art29 Group section.

Interesting to see if any consumer will push the question of a company
evidencing they have put in place appropriate written contracts and
supporting monitoring to show security is being adequately addressed. Im not
aware the consumer has any rights to have such evidence direct from
controllers but wonder what would occur if they asked the OIC to investigate
the company to prove security compliance?.

question.
