Dear Group,
Universities offer a peer guide scheme whereby 2nd Year students
volunteer to look after 1st Year students showing them around and giving
advice, answer queries and befriend students who are homesick or not
coping. They meet in a variety of locations and various times.
This is voluntary work and the volunteers are asked to complete a
questionnaire.
Would it be excessive to ask the volunteer to declare if they have any
'spent' convictions? This would then be discussed at an interview if it
was felt that they are relevant to that purpose.
My understanding of 'spent convictions' is that once the sentence is
complete and the specified time elapsed then it is finished and would
not therefore be a valid question to ask. Perhaps students will be too
young to have these types of convictions.
We do however need to consider 'duty of care'.
Do other universities offering the scheme ask for details of any
criminal convictions?
Any comments welcome,
Sue
