I work on the assumption that Council Tax data can only be used for Council Tax purposes as per LGFA.

Subject: Re: [data-protection] Secondary Uses of CT Data
I originally thought that protecting the public purse may be a way, but the
teams themselves have said that Housing Benefit is not always directly
linked to CT benefit, although of course it may well be in many cases, and
the recovery of the overpayments is done separately.
They are quite comfortable about using CT data to recover Council Tax
benefits, but they say that Housing benefits is quite separate and the LGFA
says no other uses barring empty properties, but I would be very interested
if others have a different interpretation of this?

***** This email was received from the INTERNET *****
Hi All,
Am I right in assuming that even for a purpose such as claiming back
overpaid housing benefits LA's are not allowed to use CT data in any way
shape or form? And that this is governed by the LGFA and not DPA.?
Further to this has anyone made any other uses of CT, or lobbied anyone for
more secondary uses to be included. (off board comments if you would prefer)
Thoughts greatly appreciated.
Sara Jane
