We had this a few years ago where someone had gone missing in another area in Scotland. The Police in that area sent letters out to all Councils asking if the missing person had moved to the area - the suspicion was that he was either missing/dead. We wrote back to confirm that he was not in our area. The chap was eventually found but unfortunately, he was dead.

I'd be interested to hear of how subscribers would respond to a police
request for details about a missing person.
I can't see that s.29 would apply or that it would protect the vital
interests of the individual. I can see an arguement that it is in the
legitimate interests, but would this prejudice the rights and freedoms of
the person?
My understanding is that if the police are given the information they
would check that the person is ok, but not disclose whereabouts to anyone.
Any thoughts on how this should be approached?
