Hello all,
Can anyone advise me on the following query:
Recently I was giving a FOI briefing to one of our cemeteries teams and
during the briefing. A member of staff raised a DP issue regarding access
to burial records. Apparently family members of the deceased request access
to the recorded infomation and genealogists also request access for
research purposes.
Although the DP Act doesn't relate to deceased people, the records contain
contact details of next of kin ie. name, address, etc. The records are
organised in a way which means other next of kin details of deceased
individuals can been seen by people looking for their relatives details. I
have checked the Local Authorities Cemetries Order 1977, but hasn't given
me much help in trying to establish whether these type of records are open
for public inspection.
My question is should the records be open to inspection or should the team
retrieve the information for the requesters? Also, what about the position
of allowing genealogists to look through records. Again should staff
retrieve requested information for them, baring in mind the time and
resources it would take to search and locate the requested information.
Thank you in advance for your help.
