We've the e-mail addresses of three categories of people here:
1. The people who have left. The original question says "they emailed as
many of their contacts as possible informing them that they were leaving"
so they obviously are not averse to contacts being informed and colleagues
taking on the work.
2. The colleagues who have taken over the work. They would expect to be
receiving these messages so that shouldn't be a problem.
3. The people sending the e-mails. They probably don't care who within the
company deals with the matter so long as somebody does effectively. In any
case, I would expect that if I sent an e-mail (or a letter for that matter)
to a named person in a company that there would be no guarantee that it
would be dealt with by that person.
I wouldn't have thought there was a problem.
