I'm a participant in the pilot and, needless to say, had a good read at
the data protection information provided. There was plenty of it.
However, if you've read one insurance/bank etc. DP notice they are all
pretty similar.
There may also be some doubt about whether the information being
collected is actually personal information. The system works using a
device fitted into the car which uses GPS information to record the
journeys that the car makes. The box then phones home each night with
the information.
I think of the scenario as very similar to telephone call data. In
itself, it does not identify who makes the call. In the same way, there
is no way to automatically identify the car driver. However, it may
become personal data when the driver is identified in the event of an
insurance claim.
What's in it for me? Cheaper insurance during the pilot and potentially,
cheaper insurance long term for the ten miles or so I travel to work
each day. In addition, if the car is stolen, the company can also phone
the car and get it to send the location, which will then be reported to
the police.

Strange that their web pages dealing with this issue and how to sign up
as a volunteer do not mention Data Protection - nor does the press
release on the (parent company) Aviva web site. There again, neither
does the press release dealing with the acquisition of HPI which "will
provide NUI with an access point to capture new customers at a key stage
of their purchasing decision ".
I'm sure all will be OK though - when I, as a policy/share holder, asked
Aviva about their plans for complying with Principle 8 when outsourcing
work to India I was assured (eventually, after contacting the Chairman)
that everything was in place.
