No. I would ask that they exercise their discretion and remove details
which would identify me from the search fields of their computer. I would
be happy if necessary for the information to be retained on that record,
with the relevant notices, in another field. If the offender was no longer
in this country and not able to lawfully return, I would demand all of my
details be removed.

Sue.
Bearing in mind that police systems are probably now sufficiently
interlinked to allow the use of fingerprints as the main nominal record
identifying feature, and that many police tacticians may well be interested
in having fingerprints as the main identifier, period; Pressure points such
as this could well produce unforeseen outcomes such as fingerprints becoming
by default a first identification mechanism. I have found some fun and
amusement in the past to be tails that wag dogs; those dogs do then have a
preference for chasing their own tails.
My personal opinion is that generally there would be much dissent to a move
in which people had to go to a police station to have your fingerprints
scanned as a means of allowing vetting to take place prior to obtaining a
job or housing. Opinions of course are only as valid as the justifications
behind them, so this should be born in mind, as my opinions will obviously
be coloured by my background and my main current interest in 'privacy' as
opposed to public/private life.
Perhaps members would like to comment if they would dissent from having to
having to identify themselves and their business to the police in such a way
if they changed their housing, job or obtained a contract which required
some vetting to take place.
