Ignoring Roland's healthy cynicism for a moment - and no, I am not
associated with the industry and have nothing to gain, the use of wireless
handsets brought to the table is common in France and I first used such a
pin device at a till at Homebase in the UK over the weekend. This system may
not be perfect but a technology which is more difficult to copy combined
with the use of a pin which is either right or wrong compared with a scruffy
signature which is (maybe) verified with that narrow strip on the
credit/debit card has to be better.
