Don't you just adore TLAs!
A couple of weeks ago I received an SMS to my private mobile phone and to my
wife's private mobile phone from a partnership between a major mobile
service provider and a national charity. This is despite 2002/58/EC,
despite my never having granted permission of any description to either
organisation to send SMS to either mobile and despite each being TPS
registered, and having been TPS registered for months and months.
Today, interestingly just as I had renewed my contract with one mobile
service provider, I received UCE from another one offering me a different
contract (and one that costs more! Go figure!!).
The first service provider has said "There must have been a misunderstanding
about how your permissions are held", and "they have now been set to exclude
you form UCE". Ostensibly valid, and yet something smells, here. I suppose
it's the same misunderstanding about driving past a Gatso camera and getting
3 points in your licence!
But wait! How can 2002/58/EC have a "misunderstanding" associated with it?
Now there is an interesting issue to discuss. It is just a database flag.
And that database flag can be set and unset at will. Surely that is not a
misunderstanding? Surely instead it is a person failing to do their job
right!
Oh yes. Both transgressors have been reported to:
UKIC
ASA
TPS
Loads of TLAs of course. But I hate UCE!
