On-line services are - IMHO - amongst the worst offenders when it comes to
excessive & unnecessary collecting of personal data.
Try having several separate e-mail accounts, including one solely to use
for this purpose that you rarely or never access - works OK for me! I
believe a number of enterprising organisations now offer 'temporary' e-mail
facilities for registering / shopping.
Its the ones that insist on a phone number that lose my business - I'm ex-
directory because I don't want marketing calls at home or at work!
