Carrying on from DVLA registration documents
I was recently contacted by a colleague who had over stayed her
welcome in a Sainsbury's car park. At the time nothing was said and
she thought that she had got away with it. However, two weeks after the
event she received through the mail a fine of £40.00 from a private
contractor for her overstay in the car park. The firm had contacted the
DVLA with her vehicle registration number and the DVLA provided the
firm with her address etc.
Now, she did stay in the car park for longer than she should. But there
was a barrier system in use until recently, it appears that Sainsburys at
this particular store have now moved to a franchised person system who
phones the DVLA for driver details.
On the DVLA website it states:
The law allows DVLA to release the name and address of a vehicle
keeper to the police, to Local Authorities for the investigation of offences
and decriminalised parking contraventions and to anyone else who can
demonstrate 'reasonable cause' for their request. .... Enquiries from
companies enforcing car parking restrictions on private land are
considered to meet the 'reasonable cause' criteria. However, I don't
seem to remember there being anything about this on my Car
Registration document.
