There is a requirement in law that details of objections have to be made
available for public inspection but there is no mention in the relevant
legislation about the details of objectors. In the absence of such vires, planning
authorities have to make a judgement as to whether "details of objections" means
giving the personal data of the objectors. Some authorities remove the names
and addresses from the public file but others leave them in. Some objectors
receive threats and have their windows broken. Maybe the whole planning process
needs an overhaul, some authorities are even putting names and addresses on
web sites without the applicant's (or objector's) consent.
