I am also a keen amateur photographer. Any picture I take for competition or
for exhibition will only be entered/exhibited with permission if it contains
an identifiable individual. In some cases the model has consented in advance
and usually if the pics are taken at the club she (normally a woman but not
always) has already signed the consent form before the photographers decend upon
her. If I don't get written consent in advance I will, out of courtesy, ask
the person before I take a picture if they mind - and if the picture is good
enough, whether they would mind me using it in the competition / exhibition.
More often than not, they give me their name and address for a complementary
copy of the photo.
So some photographers do care.
Like Charles, I prefer to take pictures of sunsets, landscapes, animals, etc.
But having seen the Horizon programme last night, chimpanzees are now on my
list of subjects where consent is required.
