This follows the recent posting about mirror.ac.uk services being moved to a
new provider and the fact that the new service has minimal offering compared
with the old mirror services. You can sitll access the old service at
www.mirrorservice.org
My query is not so much whether we want the old or new type services but
that DP has been used as an excuse as I see it. Poor old DP..........:-)
So this is the second time I have seen the DPA used as a block to provide
continuous/transparent services when a Jisc Service has been awarded to
another organization . The last time you will all recall was when
Mailbase was awarded to Jiscmail ( a new name (Newcastle didn't part to
part with the name) and a new organization to manage the services) and
not being allowed access to email addresses which nearly caused an ac.uk
riot, it when on and on and on and everyone got really cheesed off not
least of course Jiscmail who couldn't provide a pucker service to start
with.
Now it seems the same has happened with the move of www.mirror.ac.uk to
another organization.
I was of the opinion that Data Protection is there to provide protection
for individuals etc. and good practice for Data Controllers etc. but not
for organizations to use as a tool when something happens that they feel
aggrieved about - apols to old Mirror Services Consortium and to
Eduserv who are under the Jisc control.
What do others think? As the JISC is very good at getting services to
go out for tender every 3 years or so even when the service works well
without any problems whatsoever, maybe we should approach the JISC
before the next time this happens if other members of this list think
they are using Data Protection incorrectly to cause problems. It seems
EDUSERV only have mirror for 3 years so we should start now I guess!
Comments?
Thanks

This is what the JISC web site says
"Eduserv aims to mirror all of the technical resources available prior
to 1 August 2004 at www.mirror.ac.uk. Due to intellectual property and
data protection issues, Eduserv has not been able to secure the contact
details for the current UK Mirror Service's resource provider.
Therefore, Eduserv is having to independently contact each of the 150+
sources. With this said, some mirrors may not be available from August;
however, the aim is to bring them all online as soon as possible. Post
launch, Eduserv will continue to pass mirror requests to the JISC Mirror
Steering Group, which makes all final decisions regarding resources to
mirror."
