And as an italian, where women have kept their birth
name since the seventies following a change in the law
(mostly triggered by tax/ID regulation changes), and
married women have had to revert to using their birth
name in official documents, the whole thing ties me
into discussions whenever asked for. I would also
imagine it'd be hardly useful in smaller communities
where people may know three generations of a family. I
sometime get approached by some old soul saying: "you
belong to so-and-so" mentioning some long-dead
relative I've never met...
Is the UK the only country thinking that your mum's
name is a security feature?
