I don't disagree with you over the extra security of SSL etc.
Double opt in is interesting. We have just proved for a client that double
opt in actively discourages business to business registrations on a web
site. It astounded us and the client, since our own preference is always
for it.
We moved to a service that is assuredly DPA and Anti Spam compliant, but
with instant gratification (they could fill a form out at once) and the
response rate trebled.

I prefer the double opt-in method or other confirmed methodology.
While I am listing my preferences publicly, I will only enter my personal
information on confirmed secured sites, perhaps under https, and would like
to see that nice little padlock in the corner as locked when I use the
Information Commissioner's site.
