I thought Peter's post was slightly hysterical. The police don't have the
right to get any information that they want, and generally don't assume that
they have it. If a law genuinely does prevent us from disclosing, there is
nothing we can do. I didn't get any sense from the debate that people were
furiously finding a way to prevent disclosure. Moreover, I think the
instinct to protect the privacy of people who attended a sexual health
clinic is understandable. I would be concerned if DP officers rode roughshod
over the rights of innocent people just to comply with a police request. If
we can assist the police, we should, but not if that means breaking the law.
Surely the other people who attended the clinic could end up being victims
if very sensitive information about them is abused?
