Summary
The area of information access has been one which has seen increasing
interest in recent years. This can be attributed to the passage of
legislation including the Data Protection Act 1998, which gives
individuals rights of access to their personal information held by
companies. The Freedom of Information Act 2000, which is to be fully
implemented by January 2005 has much wider ramifications for public
bodies, by giving citizens rights to request any information which they
hold.
In order to comply with the above legislation, particularly the Freedom
of Information Act, there is a perceived need for organisations need to
change their information handling practices, in order to cope with the
requirements imposed by the law
UMIST has conducted a survey to ascertain the practices and the
approaches to handling subject access and information requests across a
wide variety of organisations. This work has been sponsored by SIBILO
(UK) Ltd (www.sibilo.co.uk) and it will also include the assessment of
readiness for the full compliance to the Freedom of Information Act and
the availability of software tools aiding the process.
This seminar will see the presentation of the survey results and a
discussion of its ramifications for industry.
