The comment "Race is irrelevant"is wrong. The school has a "strict catchment area" means that, in most cities, there will be a higher proportion of black and ethnic minority students or a higher proportion of white students than there is across the city. There needs to be a measure of whether schools in "white" areas are doing better than those in "black" areas. Also, if, for instance, there are e.g. 5% black people in the catchment area but no black students at your local school because black pupils are using other schools, the reason needs to be ascertained.

Of less concern where I live, as the intake isn't selective and appears
to be on the basis of a strict catchment area only. You either live in
the right place, or you don't; race is irrelevant.

No, they also asked "Language at home" and "Religion". The former could
be understood to allow them to prepare better for pupils whose first
language isn't English, and the latter leads onto their next two
questions about participation in assemblies and RE classes.
