I don't see it that way at all. It's about "needing to know". They
need to check my credit rating, they need to know my bank details, and I
may need to contact them, but I wouldn't want my (notional) ex-wife to
find out details of my financial arrangements simply by saying "I want
to know x,y,z, about Mr Smith, I'm Mrs Smith" and have them tell her.

Except that they are already "dealing with" all those other folks like
credit checking agencies and all manner of unspecified "other
organisations", as well as with me. It's that two-faced-ness I'm
complaining about.
