Colleagues, some advice please.
Like most HE institutions, we process applications for senior doctorate
degrees ( DSc etc) using, in part, a referee system whereby senior academics
in other institutions give their (professional) opinions on the quality of
the submissions made by candidates for the senior degree.
The system operates well but partly because the referees expect that their
opinions are given to the University in confidence and that whilst we might
release the contents of their opinion to the candidate, we do not release
their names.
I am not at all sure that the University can rest upon 'given in confidence'
as sufficient grounds for withholding the name of the referee and am likely
to advise accordingly, but it has been suggested to me that the whole system
will collapse if the referees are 'outed' as the cause of a failed
submission. Academia is after all a small place .....
Any comments ?
