I have been asked for an opinion on a research project which is soon to be taking place within the organisations I offer support and advice to. The situation is:
GP practices want to use some software which uses patient's names to assign them individually with an ethnic origin. They then want to enter this information into the GP system. They believe that this is acceptable practice and does not breach the DPA. I have said that the data quality/accuracy can not be guaranteed therefore would be in breach of the DPA, but in addition to this I not convinced about the ethical/legal or moral issues sounding this. Is there any legislation which will prevent them from doing this?
Thanks
Lisa
