I remember when I was one of a handful of people in the country with a
certificate saying the manufacturer had trained me to repair floppy disk
drives (rather than them being sent back to the factory). These days I
doubt if anyone repairs them at all, but twenty years ago they were one
of the most expensive items in a personal computer (worth about 2 grand
of today's money). Such technological certification does date, though.
