I'm sure most of you would have heard about the US-VISIT project by now
but here's an update anyway.
Americans are building a system of databases and identification devices
to monitor visitors crossing U.S. borders. Known as the United States
Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology program, or US-Visit,
the contract is worth around $15 billion.
The field for potential prime bidders on the system had been narrowed to
three companies:
* Lockheed Martin Corp. - Booz Allen Hamilton Inc., Harris Corp., IBM
Corp., Management Systems Designers Inc., Science Applications
International Corp., SI International and Unisys Corp.
* Accenture - Dell Inc., Global Technology Management Inc., Raytheon
Co., Sandler and Travis Trade Advisory Services Inc., Sprint, SRA
International Inc. and Titan Corp.
* Computer Sciences Corp. - EDS, Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, Arinc
Inc., and Bechtel Corp.
It's been announced yesterday that the Accenture-led Smart Border
Alliance got the contract. In a press release, Accenture says:
The end vision for the Smart Border Alliance solution
is built around the concept of a virtual border. The
virtual border is designed to operate far beyond U.S.
boundaries to help DHS assess the security risks of all
U.S.-bound travelers and prevent potential threats from
reaching U.S. borders. It helps DHS locate and remove
U.S. travel violators without increasing waiting times
at the border. Most important, the virtual border makes
U.S. border inspectors the last line of defense, not the
first, in identifying potential threats.
I'm guessing Privacy and Data Protection is a different story across the
ocean after 9/11. I'd be curious to find out more about this virtual
border business - how they intend to collect the mentioned information
and how it all works with the EU legislation.
