As far as I am concerned I will only carry out one assessment a day.
I allow 4 hours for the time I spend with each student, but this frequently
spills over to five hours. A detailed personal history takes at least an
hour [vital for helping comfirm what specific learning difficulties - if any
- might be present].
Reading & spelling, including preliminary screening for Irlen Syndrome,
takes about 45 minutes, and the WAIS - III administration takes about 90
minutes minimally. Debriefing then takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
As four hours is a long time I take breaks whenever a student requests one
- and it is made very clear to each student the importance of going at their
own pace.
Writing up a report takes at least four hours and the production of an
individual barchart of the WAIS Index scores is part of that. [Students find
this particularly helpful]. The report - about 4,200 words - is then
proof-read and corrected [My typing skills are not brillant].
In essence, a report and diagnosis should be of a standard that would stand
examination in a court of law. As a needs assessor I have encountered
botched diagnoses because of lack of attention to personal history detail
and/or because an assessment has been rushed.
Debriefing is also vital. If it's not done well at this point the DO or
study skills tutor may find themselves having to do a job that should have
done on the day of diagnosis.
At the fees quoted students - and their institutions - are entitled to a
full professional assessment and high quality report. That process is a
time consuming one, but fulfilling.
