I am involved in a new HEFCE funded project looking at issues in
relation to the support of students with disabilities undertaking
professional education. The aims of the project are to identify the
issues and barriers for students with disabilities undertaking
placements in 'non-traditional' settings (i.e.practice placements)and
establish support mechanisms to aid those students. The research
strand of the project will focus primarily on those students whose
needs are not purely physical in nature, often referred to as
'unseen' disabilities such as dyslexia, mental health problems and/or
medical conditions such as diabetes and asthma. The project will work
with a number of key stakeholders in the fields of health and social
care to produce an evidence based practice guide for staff to promote
consistent and effective learning support of disabled students
undertaking professional education.
We are interested in gathering examples of existing policies and
guidelines in place to support disabled students on placement. We
would like to hear from Disability Services in HEIs about how they
support their students with disabilities 'off-Campus' as well as from
students, practice teachers and placement co-ordinators about their
views and experiences. If anyone else feels able to contribute
anything such as article/resources/book references then please do. For
more information or if you'd like to be involved please e-mail
