hi
A manager here has a policy of setting up email auto-replies ('I am off ill until
...' type of thing) when his staff are away from work for more than a few days.
Apart from the fact that this will alert 'spammers' to a valid email address,
which is annoying enough, is there a DP implication?
In effect, such a message automatically announces to anyone who emails a member
of staff in this position that they are ill (or whatever). There could be many
reasons why a person may not want their 'off work' status advertised outside of
their place of work. And as the University's regulations governing use of
computing facilities, including email, allow for private/personal use, this might
be particularly relevant where relatives are concerned (not wanting to alarm
elderly or 'frail' ones for example).
Any thoughts?
regards
Martin
