Don't panic. Don't think your personal details are going to be revealed to
an enquirer. The Audit Commission Act did not repeal the provisions in the
Local Government Finance Act 1992 that would prevent the Council Tax (CT)
records of individuals being made available for public inspection. The
clause was inserted into this Act to plug a gap in an older law that
suggested personal details of employees' wages were a "book" and an elector
insisted on seeing the wage bills for small units of a council.
The total amount of CT, the general details of how the CT is calculated and
other information that does not relate to individuals is already available in
most, if not all, local authorities. Personal details of the CT payers are
not. Not even defaulters.
