If this mail gets through you will see that I use BT Openworld as my ISP. I
tried just now to reply directly to Chris Pounder at Masons. Chris,
Messagelabs is blocking mail to Masons! It said:
SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO:<editted for privacy by tim
[log in to unmask]>:
host mail19.messagelabs.com [193.109.254.3]: 553-Sorry, your ip address
62.172.195.12 has been
553-blacklisted. Please contact +44(0) 1452 627 777 to
553 remove yourself from the blacklist.
So I called Messagelabs. "BT is aware" they say. And to be fair, there is
nothing they can do about it
Previously I found I (and the rest of BT Openworld) am (are) spam blocked
by:
SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO:<[log in to unmask]>:
host ori.rl.ac.uk [130.246.192.52]: 550 5.7.1
<[log in to unmask]>... Mail from 62.172.195.246 refused by blackhole
site rbl-plus.mail-abuse.ja.net
So I called BT Openworld support. They "Can't do anything about it, because
some of their customers use "Open relay" email servers. But any run of the
mill web host and service provider terminates those who use open relay. The
support desk was adamant that they can do nothing about it, though. I have
tried to escalate it. We shall see. I hope.
So, why is this relevant to the list?
OK, it's marginal until you look at Data Protection also having an anti-Spam
face. Once you embrace being against spam (not the Hormel foods item,
though really I include it for personal preferences), then you have to look
not only at the rights of the recipient, but the rights of the sender. And
I feel that my correspondence, on a DP Issue, incidentally, with Chris, has
been interfered with. Technically not opened, exactly, because the envelope
was rejected, but I feel "unprivate" suddenly.
Perception is reality. A person not technically aware is likely to feel as
I feel without caring about the explanation.
I have had to rejoin this list as "me at work" now, since I cannot get email
from "me, the private individual" through. And I can now no longer work
from home reliably. I hear you all weep. Crocodile tears, of course ;)
