Dear Sheila,
Would this student write down what he wants to say instead or type it on a
laptop? Do you know why he wants to take the course and what he hopes to get
out of doing it? I think he may be better off doing another module as
communicating (in some way) would seem an integral and unchangable part of the
counselling module. I'm sure he could produce assignments on how one should
communicate in a situation like this, but he is not demonstrating that he can do
it in practice and it is this practical part of the module that seems integral.

Comments please.
We have a third year psychology/sociology student who has mental health
difficulties. He is very withdrawn, isolated, never speaks to anyone,
has been exempt from the occasional groupwork and presentations
throughout his course and has had extra written assignments instead. He
is quite happy with the way things are and he is a successful student in
terms of his grades. For his final module he has chosen a Counselling
course which as you will all know includes groupwork every session,
students communicating their fears, thoughts etc etc. He is insisting
an attending the course, not being put in any group when the group is
doing coursework and just listening without saying anything. Also to
be exempt from any presentaions.
The module handbook explained the contents of the module and what would
be included, the tutor feels the effect on the rest of the group would
be unacceptable as they will be expected to communicate with each other
and work together and there would be an observer who would be one of
their peers and it would effect the dynamics of the group. They feel
he would be better placed to choose another module - he has 7 others to
choose from. The student is stating 'discrimination' - any comments.
If the student was communicating in some way there would not be an issue
but the fact that he refuses to communicate at all.....
Any thoughts please.
