In all this debate about "proof reading" has anyone given
thought to the fact that the vast majority of students,
disabled or not, will have someone proof read their
dissertation. Most of us, when we write something
ourselves, read what we think we have written and don't
always notice errors. The difference is surely that a
dyslexic student may require more assistance of this nature
and a greater level of explanation as to why what they have
said does not make sense as it stands. Of course this
is time-consuming and while a dyslexic student may never
achieve the same levels of fluency in written work that
their peers may do, the whole point of supporting them is
to assist them to maximise their achievement- usually by
dint of a whole lot of hard work.
