Anyone with any experience of using text messaging to contact students
via an e-mail program - we use Outlook...
While the explosion of mobile phone ownership makes it easier to pin
down students we're incurring an enormous (and growing!) phone bill...
I understand that it may be possible but requires some sort of add-in
etc...
Any pointers would be welcome..

I doubt if you could do it for free. The mobile companies want revenu. But
there are text messaging centres. AOL offer this facility to members at 2p
per message I think.
Trouble is you would probably need to pay by credit card.
Why not buy a Pay as You Go mobile and top up vouchers.
I send text reminders from my mobile to students about appointments if they
seem unreliable but then I pay for my own bills and claim it back.
I'm considering using my AOL account and having a standard reminder with the
date and time added.
Make sure you get one that is easy to use for texting as some of them are
aweful.
