Is it only me, or do others feel that assessors should make more contact
with the university to establish the correct study conditions and
requirements of the course that the student will experience? Should that be
made a condition of the needs assessment?

You are wrong to assume that there are no disability officers represented on
the QAG.
There are in fact two, I am one of them, Dave Laycock is the other. In fact
there are two
others by default but they have the job of representing another interested
party. The role
of the disability officer has been discussed fully at all the meetings as a
result of
representation at these meetings.
At the outset there was a belief by some members of the QAG that DOs had no
part to play
in the DSA process and certainly should not be conducting any assessment.
Following
serious discussion it was possible for myself and Dave to ensure that not
only can those
DOs who assess be part of the assessment team but that all DOs had a real
and significant
role to play in the process. This was quite a shift from the initial
'conflict of
interest' stand that was being made.
I am unsure as to why you feel you would not be able to practice as an
assessor. Under
the new recommendations there is no reason why you should not apply for a
licence.
As to the lack of consultation, this process has been going on for the best
part of two
years and there has been nothing to stop anybody from expressing an interest
in being
involved. It is how those of us who have played a part got involved in the
first place. As
you quite rightly state there is the opportunity for everybody to now
feedback to the QAG
and the roundtable and one of those ways is through the DfES web site.
I think it is very important that there is plenty of discussion on the
recommendations
made so far and it is for this reason that the NADO conference 1st and 2nd
July will give
so much time to enable DOs to get together and discuss their issues.

Val, as an assessor at a non NFAC access centre nor likely
to be licensed under the new QAG requirements I have
serious reservations regarding the lack of consultation to
disability officers plus the often negative terms used to
describe disbility officers that do assessments from the
QAG minutes that have been published so far. There are no
disability officers on the QAG.I would urge fellow
disability officers who presently carry out assessments, no
matter how few ,to feedback to QAG via their website on
DfES pages. At the moment it is necessary to be able to
assess all disabilities to get a licence for example.Emma
