David Grant's reply seems to cover all the issues most
effectively and flags up the fact that Higher Education is
not for everyone, despite political pressure to the
contrary. A degree is not the be-all and end-all in this
world, and to encourage people to enter HE who are unable
to cope with its demands is morally wrong. As this is a
situation most likely to occur with non-standard entrants
or those who have come through access routes, perhaps more
rigorous pre-entry counselling is required and even some
level of aptitude testing could be considered for some
subject areas.
