Dear All,
With regard to braille copies of prospectus, SENDA currently
requires that Institutions are anticipatory and that they make
reasonable adjustments, but does this actually mean that we all
must have Braille copies to hand? As a member of a group _of_
(rather than 'for') disabled people we can provide all of our
documents in Braille on request, but we do not Braille as a matter
of course. Surely to be anticipatory would be to know where you
can Brailling done relatively quickly when it is requested? As for
Brailling just parts of a prospectus, my personal approach would be
to try and talk to the student and discover exactly what information
they require, if they have specific questions, these may be able to
be answered without the need to Braille the prospectus at all.
In my personal opinion, it would not be sufficient to send someone
a disk when they have requested Braille for the reason that
underdeveloped country or not, not everyone has access to a
computer and especially not with any adapted technology that they
may require to use it. If this was the case, surely people would
just find out the information that they required from the institution's
website?
Just for clarification of earlier points, as far as I know, SENDA
applies to all students regardless of whether they are home,
international, distance learners etc etc etc. However, has anybody
tried the Skill or Disability Rights Commission Websites as they
may provide more information on these issues? If I get the time
later, I will try to have a look and post another message if I find
anything.
Hope this helps,
