Dear Eileen, do lab technicians, computer on line help officers and others
have broad responsibilities such as :
advise on the implementation of legislation throughout the University -
including to its most Senior staff and Governors? Understand the legal
situation?
advise and liaise across the board on the implementation of policy and
procedures (re in this case disability)?
liaison on DSA's (or other funding)
advise specifically, specific, groups of people?
prepare and deliver staff development?
manage HEFCE projects and all that entails?
write bids for HEFCE funding?
advise on examination concessions and be part of the process?
advise other professionals, architects, project managers in new build and
refurbishments?
advise academic and other staff on specific disabilities?
To name but a few tasks! I could go on!
Disability Officers have responsible positions and the post should be
recognised as such. Here we grade the post not the person in it.
By downgrading posts indicates, even though legislation is in place, sadly,
that some institutions may not be taking issues relating to disability
seriously enough!
There appears to be a lot of movement of disabilitiy Officers and I would
suggest that consistency would help within an organisation, where people
would get to know the postholder and learn over time to trust a persons
judgement and integrity!

A recent job evaluation at our institution based on job descriptions
downgraded the (experienced, not novice) assessor to the same
level as a lab technician, computer on line help officer, PA and
various other technical and admin staff. The post is now one grade
above an office manager.
