Re Christine's message of last week regarding the responsibility of whoever
is funding the student's course to pay for support:-
The problem is that the people who fund the students' courses, i.e. the NHS
and some of these Workforce Development Confederations, have entered into
contracts with some universities, which state that the university is
responsible for paying for the support costs.
In my (non-legal) view, these contracts could be contested under the
Disability Discrimination Act if they state that the university is
responsible but do not provide any financial resources to enable the
university to meet the costs.
I suspect that the problem in some institutions will be that the NHS etc
will make some funding available to universities to meet the support costs,
but this may not be getting to the people who need to provide the support,
or it may not be enough to cover all the costs involved. In other cases, no
funding may be available within the contracts because the institutions don't
negotiate to get any - and as usual, 'if you don't ask, you don't get'.
So, it's worth trying to find out what the position is within your
institution, because not all of the contracts appear to be the same.
This is my view of the situation as I see it at present - anyone else with
more comprehensive information is welcome to let the list know!

Cindy
