Dear all
I would appreciate advice/comments/solutions to the following
A post graduate student nearing the end of her course, so at the
dissertation stage, is working independently, and not required to attend
lectures. She lives some 20 or so miles from here, and is not able to
travel. She has requested, through inter-library loan, a thesis. The
library have obtained this in the form of microfilm. She would need
therefore to come to the library to view this. The student says she
cannot travel, the library is bound by copyright rules not to photocopy
the thesis, and only to make the microfilm available for use in the
library (reference only). This would apply even if they were able to
obtain a printed copy.
The student does have the support of a non-medical helper, but the NMH
would only be allowed to print out sections of the thesis, and this
would have to be within copyright guidelines. The NMH would not
necessarily know which parts werew relevant to the student needs.
Does anyone have experience of a similar situation? It appears that
the legislation on accessibility is being hampered by legislation on
copyrights.
