Dear Emma,
The following is from the Guidance Notes to the Student Support Regs and is
from Chp 7. LEA's use these
Designated courses
B189 Regulation 4 provides the criteria for course designation. A first
degree or higher academic qualification should normally be the entry
requirement for a course to be designated. Some postgraduate courses
require a masters degree as an entry requirement. The Education (Grants
for Disabled Postgraduate Students) (Amendment) Regulations 2001 removed,
with effect from 1st September 2001, the requirement that a course must be
of a standard higher than a first degree. This amendment was made because
there are a number of postgraduate courses, such as postgraduate
certificate and diploma courses, which require a first degree or higher as
part of the entry requirement but the level of the course is not higher
than that of a first degree.
B190 Courses need to be provided by publicly funded institutions in
order to be automatically designated, although courses at other
institutions may be designated on application to the Department.
