Hello,
Before starting a course, any student who stated that they have a disability
on their application form is called in for an individual needs assessment.
This also includes drawing up a PEEP (personal emergency evacuation plan).
These are carried out by the Learning Support Manager, and passed on to the
Health & Safety Officer, Properties Manager, personal tutors and Learning
Support Assistants. We have so-called safe areas in every building, in which
students who cannot get out of the building quickly enough will be safe for
about one hour. We also have a couple of special evacuation chairs for
students with mobility problems. Evacuation times for all students and staff
are closely monitored in our once-per-term evacuation drills, and particular
attention is paid to the evacuation of disabled students and staff.
Hope this is useful.

Hi
I would recommend talking to Su Peace who wrote the original guide to PEEPs
and does consultancy in this area of work. Her e-mail

There is also a MSc student at the University of Ulster who is doing his
thesis on this topic David Stewart and his e-mail is

Subject: Personal evacuation plans
Hello all,
I can appreciate that it is an extremely busy time of year for you all,
however, I was wondering if anyone could share any information or experience
they may have about arranging personal evacuation plans (PEP's) for students
with disabilities. Disability services will be working alongside the
Universities Estates dept and Schools/Faculties in an attempt to get a
"system" in place regarding emergency evacuation. Any ideas?
Many thanks
Karen
