New TechDis Workshop - SMIRK, 16 October 2003
TechDis have recently introduced a new workshop to the series. On the 16 October, David Kraithman from the University of Hertfordshire will be presenting a half-day workshop on the newly developed SMIRK Software.
SMIRK (simple media-integrating resource creator) enables academics to produce multimedia presentations that can be loaded into a virtual learning environment or distributed by other means, e.g. ftp or CD-Rom. The user interface has been designed so that the presentations can be created in a similar manner to giving a chalk-and-talk lecture or seminar. Audio files are compressed in background negating the usual need for technician support.
SMIRK has internal support to encourage the creation of presentations that are accessible to students with a range of cognitive, physical and sensory impairments. Sample presentations can be viewed at <http://homepages.feis.herts.ac.uk/smirk/>
During this half-day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to try the software and receive a copy to take away.
The workshop should appeal to staff who wish to produce online materials that are richer in scope than other commercially available presentation packages. In addition, the software should meet many of the international standards of accessibility and therefore support a diverse group of students.
