Dear Elvira,
Good to receive your introductory e-mail and rather interesting to hear that
I'm not the only blind employee working in Further or Higher education!
I have worked at APU for seven years and for the three years before that
studied as an Information Systems undergraduate, completing a 2:1 honours
degree early in 1996. Since then, I have developed and managed APU's
Regional Transcription Centre, a unit which provides Braille, digital and
analogue audio, large print, electronic and tactile maps and diagrams to
business and educational institutions throughout the UK on a self funding
basis. We now provide our service to over 100 organisations and we provide
our services with the ISO 9001 quality system and Investor In People (IIP),
the only transcription centre in the UK to have achieved these quality
standards. If you need more information please visit:
www.apu.ac.uk/rtc
I have also been studying, on a part time basis, for an MA in Managing
Disability Services, which I am near to completing (when I can get my 25,
000 dissertation finished!). It is also interesting to learn that you are
thinking of developing a training course for JAWS, I use JAWS and I find
that many students have difficulty in obtaining quality training for this
piece of software, although I believe that the ACCESS centres do a good job.
Again, good to hear from you and we may talk in the future.
Best wishes,
Steve Carey
Manager, Regional Transcription Centre
APU.
