Hello Stuart
Yes, we have a similar case, namely a student who needs to use a hoist
for all transfers. The student's local OT and Social Worker and the
student met onsite here with our local Social Services Community OT
prior to the student arriving and the appropriate provision has been
made. In our case this was the installation of a tracking hoist and the
additional loan of a mobile hoist for the past academic year as the
student, who is studying languages spent a year abroad, one semester in
Belgium and one semester in Germany. The cost is the same as to any
other local resident which is currently £20.00.
I am informed by our Community OT that similar equipment has been loaned
to the University, on the basis that our students are resident within
his 'patch', for over twenty-five years - I cannot comment on that
having only been in post for four years.
We also have a height adjustable bed on loan from the Community Health
Trust for another student on the same basis i.e. that they are resident
within the catchment area of the Trust.
Both students are registered with a GP at the University Health Centre.

Subject: Hoist for Disabled student.
Hi,
Apologies for the cross posting.
We are currently working with a Disabled Student (prospective) who
requires
an electric hoist to enable them to transfer into bed. The student will
be
staying in our Halls of residence. I have involved the relevant
Occupational Therapist(s) and Social workers from the student's local
social services. They have done site / risk / need assessments.
My question is who pays for the hoist - the Social services or us? My
guess is us as we are the service provider.
Has anyone had similar experiences?
Would you be willing to share them and any good practice / solutions
etc?
Many thanks
Best Wishes
Stuart
