hi
as far as i am aware the usual amount of loan available to part-time
students is £500 (don't think that is scotland only). the fee waiver is
based on the student being in receipt of a benefit, which they keep,
therefore if your student is on DLA or incapacity benefit they should be
able to keep this as income. for incapacity ben. this may depend on hours
studied. also, they might lose income support, if they're on it, so check
with Dept work & Pensions.
cheers

Subject: Studying part time on a full time course
Dear All,
I hope I'm not going over old ground again, but I have a complicated case
that I am trying to sort out.
I have a student who wishes to study for a law degree, but due to his
disability can only study it part time, taking about fifty percent of the
modules each year. We don't usually run part time courses here, I think I
will be able to negotiate this with his department as a 'reasonable
adjustment'. However, the difficulty is that if he studies part time,
according to the DfES he may get a fee waiver and will only be entitled to a
£250 grant and not a student loan. This will make it very difficult to
support himself financially while studying. He is a mature student and will
not be able to rely on funding from his family and will be limited in the
number of hours he can work part time.
This seems rather unfair on this student, he is studying part time due to
his disability but cannot be supported financially. Does anyone know of a
student studying part time who has got a full student loan?
If anyone has any advice, I'd really appreciate it.
Regards
