we advertise within the college for students who may wish to be
support workers. Applicants are interviewed by our Learning support
service and if successful are given induction training. More specific
training is offered during the academic year, should the support
worker wish.
Contracts are for the academic year (in our case, September - July)
but with no guarantee of minimum hours. It's like a "bank" system; you
are put on a list and if there is work, you can take it and are paid by
the college payroll via a time-sheet system, which must be submitted
on a monthly basis.
We have a few support workers who are not students, but who have
heard about the scheme through word of mouth, and have applied to us
directly.
It seems to work very well.
