I agree with Doreen, the general descriptions and generic purposes are a
good staring point but often need tweaking to suit each DC's specific
processing. Not always possible to stick to the listed purposes as OIC
suggests in handbook.
Added a second purpose for our ERO too - conduct of elections & referenda -
to cover processing data for ballot counters, candidates & their agents.
Now that issue over sale of ER sorted I guess ought to add financial orgs &
credit reference agencies back in as recipients? Took them out at time of
renewal because we weren't risking selling to anyone.
As to the original question about VLEs - I would have thought important to
(a) decide what / how much tracking will be done on a general basis (b) make
sure that it can be justified for business purposes and not just 'because we
can' (c) make sure students are aware that it happens & why (d) adjust
notification accordingly if necessary.
And tell academic staff log in time proves nothing - as an undergraduate in
1980s I wrote my best stuff at about 5 am when I got back from clubbing,
almost 20 years later doing part-time post grad got up then to put in a
couple of hours before work!
