Dear all,
I hope there is someone more expert on this list who can help with my query...
The use of virtual learning environments (VLEs) is becoming more prevalent
and I'm becoming aware of case studies (in journals or web-published) that
report on data collected by the tracking mechanisms in the VLE (such as
date and time of access, duration, pages visited, contributions to
discussion boards etc). What I can't find is any information on whether
data collected in this way constitutes personal data under the DPA. If it
does constitute personal data, then I have a further question regarding
whether or not existing institutional registrations cover this kind of data
collection and manipulation.
I'm not implying any misuse here, just a concern that VLEs trap a whole
'class' of data that may not have been given consideration in relation to
the Data Protection Act or possibly the FOIA or the RIPA.
I'd be really grateful to hear people's views.
Regards,
Jan
