Having spoken to Lindsay by phone, this is by way of general comment. I fully
agree with Andy. CCPD has had to buy masses of equipment over the last 18
years but whenever we 'speculated' and bought something that looked
interesting or attractive that 'might come in useful', we almost invariably
ended up throwing it away unused and still boxed some years later. This was
true even of items costing £1000 or more to start with but which you couldn't
give away in the end. The trouble is you have to speculate sometimes if you
are to discover new strategies, the Alphasmart is a good example. But it had
a clearly defined use for which there was already a demand so it wasn't much
of a risk.
