Assistive Technology - Expressions of Interest for "LIFT"

CHEST is aware that sites are required to ensure that their web sites
are accessible by users with disabilities in accordance with the
Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 (SENDA). See
<http://www.ukcle.ac.uk/directions/issue4/senda.html> for more details.

We have therefore been in discussion with UsableNet with a view to
offering their LIFT web accessibility tools to the UK Higher and
Further Education community, under a CHEST Agreement.

UsableNet has already collaborated with TechDIS to make their free
Dreamweaver for Macromedia Extension web evaluation software available
to UK academia - see CHEST Software Messenger
<http://www.chest.ac.uk/messenger/mess28-10-02.html>. This software
has proved very popular and sites are now asking how they can automate
the editing, design and testing of their web sites to conform with W3C
Web
Content Accessibility Guidelines
<http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT/#wc-priority-1>.

The products under discussion are:

LIFT for Dreamweaver
LIFT for FrontPage
LIFT for Dreamweaver PRO
LIFT for FrontPage PRO
LIFT Online may also be offered if there is sufficient interest.

Full descriptions of these products can be found at
<http://www.usablenet.com/>

The intention is to offer site licences based on FTE banding, and
UsableNet is currently preparing a fully costed proposal.

CHEST would like to hear from sites that would be interested in an
agreement for the LIFT products. It is hoped to have an Agreement in
place early next year. When responding it would be helpful if you
could indicate the estimated total number of web developers within your
institution who are actively involved in updating your web site. This
will assist UsableNet to pitch the pricing to reflect the estimated
number of users (although the licence will be for unlimited users).

Please record your interest by emailing <mailto:[log in to unmask]>
with the subject heading "UsableNet LIFT".

Although an expression of interest does not commit your site to a
licence, it is hoped that responses will be based on an identified
need, subject to the price being acceptable. We also welcome comments
from currently licensed sites who may be seeking to increase the number
of licences at their institution.
